Here we are, already halfway through December, making our way to the new year. It’s a unique time of the year that urges us to reflect on the year that has gone by and the year that is coming up.
In the world of technology, it also means being on the lookout for technology trends that are bound to make a mark in the new year! The power of today’s digital capabilities is ever-growing. So, let’s take stock of the technology trends that have ruled the roost in 2022.

#1 Virtual Reality (VR)
Looking to connect with others from the comfort of your own space? VR technology is here for you, and it has been witnessing explosive growth after the pandemic. You would agree that we are not strangers to simulated 3D environments. VR is a fascinating experience that makes use of 360-degree digital environments. This inspires the creation of a reality offering an immersive experience involving virtual connections. VR technology is driven by downloadable apps or web-based VR. It can be accessed via a web browser.
#2 Edge Computing
Edge computing is the activity of capturing, processing, and analyzing data close to its source. We can think of it as an improved version of cloud computing that cuts down on bandwidth usage and boosts real-time data processing.
Today, according to Gartner, less than 10% of enterprise-generated data is created and processed at the edge. By 2025, that is predicted to grow to 75%. So, it will be interesting to see how this trend shapes up in 2023 as well.
#3 Genomics
We know that more data leads to more discoveries. Genomics is a field of science that is concerned with the structure, evolution, mapping, and editing of genomes. There is quite a lot of excitement about it! What’s more, when it joins forces with AI and data analytics software, tons of valuable healthcare insights are in store.
Genomics aims at the collective characterization and quantification of all an organism’s genes, their interrelations and influence on the organism. Advances in genomics have led to a revolution in discovery-based research and systems biology so that we are now able to understand highly complex biological systems like the brain.
#4 Quantum Computing
Most of us aren’t Feynmans when it comes to quantum mechanics. Researchers, however, leverage the principles of quantum mechanics and draw parallel calculations to facilitate quantum computing. This trend is actually a generation of super-fast computers that process information as quantum bits named “qubits” instead of the regular bits of classical computing.
With quantum computing, we can overcome the limitations of simulations in material science, chemistry, and anything else involving nano bricks of quantum mechanics.
It’s worth noting that leading economies view quantum computing as a clever technology (in the strategic sense) with emergent potential.
#5 Hyper automation
As a business leader, you always seek ways to help your business become more agile and productive. Hyper automation can make a huge difference in this quest, taking you closer to your goals. In 2022, we saw it catapult low code and no code, give AI a boost, and help cybersecurity grow. Besides, we saw more and more small and medium-size businesses going in for hyper automation. After all, it allows them to augment human capabilities without fully replacing them.
